Tax amnesty program begins accepting applications

Posted: Updated:

Louisiana's tax amnesty program is up and running for delinquent taxpayers seeking a reprieve from penalties in paying their back-owed taxes.

The program opened Monday and runs through Nov. 22.

During the two months, people can apply to get caught up on their tax bills without any penalties and with only half the interest charges they would otherwise owe on the debt.

Details are available at www.ldrtaxamnesty.com .

Lawmakers approved plans for the tax amnesty earlier this year as a way to drum up cash for the state budget. They anticipated collecting $200 million this year.

The amnesty program covers all taxes administered by the Department of Revenue, except for motor fuel taxes.

The state will offer two additional, one-month amnesty periods in 2014 and 2015, but with less generous terms.
