Failing Schools : Nash - Robinson Hopes to Prevent State Takeover

Posted: Updated:

The Caddo Parish School board is trying to save five schools from state takeover.

A community meeting is being held tonight at 6 p.m. at Huntington High school to allow stakeholders -- whether parents, alumni or just plain taxpayers -- to comment.

The five schools in question are Fair Park High School,  Woodlawn,  Atkins,  Newton Smith and Midway. Each of those schools  have been on the list  of academically unacceptable schools for the last four years or more.

In an interview with Education Reporter Eric James, Interim Superintendent Dr. Mary Nash-Robinson says while all new ideas will be considered, she  and district leaders are also looking for affirmation on the things that have been suggested to the board already.

It was at a  meeting  last Friday  when some of the most controversial  suggestions were made on how to fix the failing schools targeted for takeover. The Alliance for Education, for instance, has offered a plan that would close or convert the mission of those five schools. For instance, the Alliance recommends converting two high schools – Fair Park and Woodlawn – to K-8 campuses.

"Because we have done some things  already in the district I sincerely believe that the community is more posed  to receive changes," said Robinson.

The district has been given till December to present a formal  plan to the state's Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Robinson has set an internal deadline of Friday to put a tentative transformational plan together. Once that plan is reviewed by the Recovery School District of Louisiana, steps will be taken on how to execute those plans.

Ten Caddo schools were recently removed from the list of  failing  schools, leaving 15 schools on the list.
