Local Reaction To Affordable Care Act Before Open Enrollment

Posted: Updated:
ArkLaTex -

There's a lot going on with The Affordable Care Act in Washington, but right here in our area, there are a lot of questions of what the Affordable Care Act will mean for people. There may be a lot of changes coming our way, but how much information is available?

Health care facilities in the city are busy but after the ACA takes effect, facilities everywhere could see more even more people because they have access to health insurance.

LaKeisha Epperson is a local parent. Like so many other people we talked to, she says she doesn't know enough about ACA act to make a decision either way. What she knows is that the current access to health care isn't working for her. "I have to come up with the money before I can even be seen. My daughter has insurance but I don't so I have to either tough it out our come up with money."

Lycynthia Simpson agrees. "I'm concerned that some of us can't afford health insurance and at the same time, we'll be penalized for it."

Christopher Presnall says he's happy that he and other people will have access to care. "I think it's great that they'll get the opportunity to have the same type of access to healthcare that middle class or working people do."

Katie-Beth Davis is a local Grad Student and works part time. She said, the ACA will be a good move for her. "My father passed away, the plan was changed and I had to reapply and because I had pre-existing conditions they could reject me and they did." She says the ACA is a life saver because paying for her prescriptions alone costs a lot of money. "It costs $9,000 dollars a month for 2 shots that I need every four weeks, and they don't cover that. I can understand both sides, but for people in my situation it does benefit."

We also tried to talk to local business owners about the upcoming enrollment. Many did not want to speak on camera but say that small businesses who employ less than 50 people won't be impacted much just yet.
