Comparing national, local crime statistics

Posted: Updated:

Data recently released by the FBI shows the country saw a slight increase in violent crimes last year and a decrease in property crimes.

The FBI's annual Crime in the United States report compiles criminal data under the Uniform Crime Reporting Program from more than 18,000 cities.

The report revealed nationwide there were 1.2 million violent crimes in 2012 and about 8.97 million property crimes.

Across the country, violent crime reports are up 0.7% from 2011 to 2012.

The South was again the nation's most violent region, but Louisiana's violent crime numbers are down almost 10% from 2011-2012.

According to the Shreveport Police Department's Annual Crime Report, the city saw a slight up tick in violent crimes, but the murder rate held consistent with 2011 totals at 20: the lowest numbers in decades.

In Bossier City, all violent crimes- murder, reported rapes, and aggravated assaults were down. BCPD reported 9 murders in 2011 and 3 in 2012.

When it comes to property crimes, national and state numbers are down. The same cannot be said for Shreveport and Bossier City. Property crimes are up on both sides of the river from 2011 to 2012.

Bossier City had 236 violent crimes reported and 2,435 property crimes.

Shreveport has 1,550 violent crimes reported and 9,862 property crimes.
