Inmate turns herself in after mistakenly being released

BOWIE COUNTY, Tx. -

An inmate who was mistakenly released, is back in jail.

Tonokla Patterson, 31, was one of two inmates in the Bi-State Jail with the same last name. While one Patterson was supposed to be released Tuesday evening, Sheriff James Prince says it was the wrong one who signed out.

"She was released thinking she was this other lady with the same last name, there's no good excuse for it" says Prince.

Prince says the inmate due for release was in the recreation yard when the Patterson name was called. He says a new jail employee did not follow the correct procedures for releasing an inmate.

"It was a mistake she made, but it was also a mistake of her training officer for not making sure the job was done properly" says Prince.

Officials say the Lasalle Company, which operates the jail, has taken action against the employees who mistakenly released the wrong inmate.

"This incident is embarrassing. We can make all kind of excuses, but none of them are any good. It happened. What he have to do is learn from it, correct it and make sure it doesn't happen again" says Prince.

Since Patterson turned herself in, Sheriff Prince says she will not face additional charges.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...

Ever since allegations that veterans died waiting for care came out of phoenix, we've all been asking, why, and how could an organization aimed at helping our servicemen and women foster an atmosphere where this has gone on for so long?
