Retired SFD Captain loses home in morning blaze

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

The home of a retired Shreveport Fire Captain has been destroyed in an early morning fire.

Shreveport Fire officials say the call came in just after 7:30am Sunday morning.

It happened at a home in the 4300 block of Wildwood Drive, off Greenwood Road.

Officials say the homeowner, retired Shreveport Fire Captain Ronnie Plants, was inside at the time and sustained minor burns to his forehead, but refused medical transport.

Officials say the fire began in the back part of the home, though a portion of the roof collapsed so the original location of the blaze is still under investigation.

Exactly what caused the fire is also being investigated.

At one point, at least 15 fire trucks were on scene working to get the blaze under control.

Louis Johnson, SFD spokesperson, says Plants' specialized training is likely what saved his life.

"He has put in 28 years of service with the Shreveport Fire Department. And he said when he realized that the house was on fire, that the heat was very hot and he received burns at the top of his head. But based on his training that he has and his experience as a firefighter, he knew at that point to get down on the floor," said Johnson.
