Water and Sewer Rate Hike Take Effect in Shreveport

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

With everything else going on in the nation, the First of October has some significance here in Shreveport. It's the first day that the new water and sewer rates take effect.

Walter Smith owns RoadRunner Car Wash. He said, "There's really nothing we can do about it."

They do everything they can to save water and their water and sewer bill ends up being 700 dollars a month. Starting Tuesday, that bill is expected to go up. Smith guesses, "I think eventually it might go up 3 or 4 hundred dollars before it's all over with."

The City of Shreveport approved raising water and sewer rates to tackle our outdated water and sewer pipes after threats from the federal government. While the city's infrastructure needs the update, some families may not be able to afford the rate increase. Jimar Davis says his family is on a tight budget and the rate increase won't help. "If you only have so much coming in a month and you planned out your year off of 48 dollars and you get a 10 dollar increase, that sets you back."

Water rates are expected to go up by 13%. You can expect to see your sewer rate jump by 55% and continue to rise over the next 12 years to pay for upgrades. Smith says it's a tough economy and everyone will feel the strain. "They got to get the money from some place so everybody's going to have to pay a little more for water."

City officials say, although the rate increase takes effect today, you won't see the increase reflected in your bill until November.
