Computer glitches plague day two of Affordable Care Act open enrollment

SHREVEPORT, La. -

Day two of open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act began much like day one, plagued with computer glitches and website failures.

"Basically, we were unsuccessful yesterday."

Janet Mentasane, Director of the Martin Luther King Health Center in Shreveport, says she's been unable to log in to health care.gov.

"I was able to create the account and it sent a link to my e-mail and verify my e-mail address and basically, from there, that's as far as I was able to proceed."

Metansane and three other employees completed the 20 hour online training process to become navigators, a federally funded group of people around the state who help guide people through their options on the marketplace.

"We decided to try to navigate the site ourselves first, so we could see how exactly how it looks and how it operates and everything and had difficulty logging into the system."

Despite any current glitches, she says she applied for her clinic to be involved as a navigation site because none of MLK Health Center's patients have insurance.

But she's says she'll have to wait for the website to work out its kinks, and let the volume of visitors die down, before the clinic can begin helping people enroll.

"There's even time if you want to, or are able to, access the site yourself at home and want to explore a little bit and set up your profile and your account and look through it."

Mentasane, as well other agents trained to assist people in the enrollment process, emphasize the importance of taking time to educate yourself about each of the plans.

Anyone who enrolls before December 15th will have coverage starting January 1st.

But remember, you've got until March 31st 2014 to sign up.

There are still options for those residents who don't qualify for Medicaid and who don't qualify for federal subsidies, who still can't afford insurance.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals says residents here in Shreveport can still make appointments with University Health (formerly LSU Health) clinics, or visit one of the federally qualified health centers in the area.

The David Raines Community Health Centers is listed as one of those clinics in the Shreveport-Bossier City area.

A sudden lurch in a creeping landslide in the northwest Wyoming resort town of Jackson split a house in two and forced workers to abandon efforts to stabilize the hillside.
No one can say precisely when the mountainside collapsing into this Wyoming resort town will give way. But it appears increasingly likely that when it does, it's going to take a piece of Jackson with it.
