SHREVEPORT, La. -

More than 870 civilian workers here at Barksdale Air Force Base received their second furlough letter in five months this week, but this time it had no ending date.

The furloughs caused the commissary command and some other buildings to shut down as well as some services to be suspended, including where some disabled people work.

"I deliver sorted out mail, type up the certified and get to go on the mail truck," said Kamela Horton, who works with Barksdale's mail center.

"I just go building to building, clean the bathrooms, make sure their nice and clean. Make sure there are plenty of tissue and plenty of paper towels," explained Monique Johnson, who works on the custodial staff.

Monique and Kamela get to be civilian workers at Barksdale—thanks to the Arc of Caddo-Bossier. The program has about 60 disabled workers out at the base who are now out of work.

"They're not doing anything," said Ron Jones with Arc. "Some of them are coming over to workshop and helping us with some jobs over here that we may have for linen or custodial work around our place and that's pretty much it."

The Arc's workshop in Shreveport does the wash and makes air filters for other companies, but there's not enough work for all of the furloughed workers.

"Just come here and sit around and do nothing," said David Robinson who works at Barksdale. "That's no fun."

It's no fun for these guys not to make money either; a part of their job all of them really like.

"I do get to earn money, but I also have to pay bills and all of that too," said Wilamanda Moore. She works on Barksdale's custodial staff. When asked what she will do with out a pay check, she said: "For me, I don't know what I'm going to do."

The Arc of Caddo-Bossier continues to looks for other work for the furloughed employees to do while the shut down takes place.
