Shreveport mom's arrest highlights violent "fight videos" trend

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Shreveport Police recently arrested a local mom Chency Haggerty, 35, after she allegedly took her son to a park to fight a 14-year-old boy.

The fight was recorded and put on YouTube.

When the other boy's father complained to police, investigators were able to watch the video, hear Haggerty coaching her son in the fight and charge her with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

While the video in question was pulled from the website, there are thousands more just like it, and they'll likely be there even after the scratches face and bruises heal.

Posted Sept. 2, the upload titled "Shreveport fights broadmoor middle lab" is among the most recent local fight videos posted to YouTube.

In it, two boys exchange blows on school property while a crowd looks on. At the :14 mark, two adults- including a Shreveport Police officer- enter the frame to end the fight.

SPD says when a fight happens on school property- like another that claims to be from Fair Park High School- the school resource officer can break it up and hand out punishment, but often the argument ends before SROs can step in only to live on through the Internet.

"We must have someone initiate the complaint," says SPD's Marcus Hines. "We don't, you know, surf through the web or surf through the social sites to look for fights and then track down a victim. It simply does not work that way."

There are plenty of videos shot off school grounds tagged with locations including Cherokee Park, Cedar Grove and Cooper Road.

One of the highest viewed videos was shot just one block from Booker T. Washington. Uploaded Oct. 11, 2012, it has more than 10,000 views.

"If a victim or an alleged victim comes forward and says, 'Hey, I was attacked,' or 'This occurred and here's the evidence,' then we will launch an investigation into those claims," Hines says.

Caddo Parish Schools security director Roy Murry says there are on-duty SPD officers at every district high school and middle school. The SROs usually start a shift 30 minutes before the first bell and stay through the after-school activities.

When the two parties mutually agree to a fight, SPD says they usually do not press charges. Neither of the boys involved in Haggerty's case were charged.
