Shreveport police prepare ahead of two weekend festivals

SHREVEPORT, La. -

Red River Revel organizers put the finishing touches Friday on an event that bills itself as the Largest Outdoor Art Festival in North Louisiana before it's Saturday open.

With crowds reaching over 180,000, organizers say they're always taking notes on how to improve the outcome.

"It's a lot of work," says Kevin Stone, Red River Revel Executive Director. "It is a year-round event for us. Believe it or not, we're already planning 2014 as we go through set-up and see stuff that we might want to do different."

Shreveport Police share that sentiment. They say each event offers an opportunity to fine-tune strategies, but the decisions are usually made well in advance.

"There will be an adequate number of officers at each venue providing security for all the festival goers, just to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch," says SPD Public Information Officer Marcus Hines.

With both the Revel and the Louisiana Film Prize set up downtown, it's likely festival goers will walk between the two. SPD says there will be more than a dozen officers on hand to watch over the events and direct traffic- be it on four wheels or on foot.

"The logistics are well planned out far in advance so when we start to talk about pedestrians safety, there will be officers stationed at barricades to monitor the traffic in and out of the area to be sure that everyone is able to cross the street safely," Hines says.

Last year, the Revel paid more than $120,000 for event staff, including security.
