Top ways to get on board with Breast Cancer Awareness month

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

KTBS 3 is "going pink" for October along with CHRISTUS Health.

Together we are teaming up to win the battle against breast cancer throughout the Ark La Tex.

Are you seeing pink everywhere, but you're not sure just how to get involved with Breast Cancer Awareness month?

We've put together a few easy tips for you to follow this month.

1) For women, go get your annual mammogram. If you're over the age of 40, this is a must.

Breast cancer specialists with CHRISTUS Health say women are being diagnosed earlier in their lives than ever.

"There's media out there that's trying to push mammogram's back to 50. We're seeing more and more young women diagnosed. Early detection is key," said nurse navigator Brenda Pierce.

2) If you really want to help out, get your running shoes on and start training for the Race for the Cure.

Sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, it's the biggest fundraiser of the year for breast cancer.

The foundation sponsors a race in Dallas on Oct. 17, while the Shreveport race kicks off Nov. 2.

You can even get a team together and run with your friends.

"The American Cancer Society and the Komen Foundation also supply money for women who can't afford treatment or transportation," said Pierce.

3) Contribute to a local business that is donating to breast cancer research.

Painting with a Twist is one of the many helping out this month.

On Oct. 21, they're hosting a painting session in Shreveport and Bossier City. They will donate the proceeds to Susan G. Komen.

4) Wear pink to raise awareness for breast cancer.

It's an instant reminder of the cause. Or, do it in a virtual way. It's as simple as changing your Facebook or Twitter profile picture to the iconic pink ribbon.
