SFD stresses kitchen fire prevention after 2 cooking related fire deaths

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Two out of the five fire deaths in Shreveport so far in 2013 were caused by cooking-type fires, according to Chief Fred Sanders of the Shreveport Fire Department.

That's why the department stresses this year's National Fire Prevention Week's theme: prevent kitchen fires.

"Both in Shreveport and across the nation, kitchen fires are some of the leading causes of fires in the home as well as fire related injuries," said Sanders.

National Fire Prevention Week kicked off Sunday across the U.S. and runs through Saturday.

The National Fire Protection Association says the two out of every five home fires start in the kitchen. It's a number that can easily be reduced.

"If you leave the stove one, you can predict that over time it will ignite and cause a fire and could possibly cause fire related injury or death," said Sanders. "That's what we're trying to get the public to see; if we can predict it, we can prevent it."

The Shreveport Fire Department also attends schools this week to teach kids how to escape if their house is on fire. On Saturday, the fire department will pass out smoke detectors to the Cedar Grove community starting at 8 am.
