Government shutdown delays arrival of flu vaccinations

SHREVEPORT, La. -

Fighting the Flu may be further away than first thought. As part of the government shutdown, the CDC said last week it would not be able to track the spread of the seasonal flu. It also said that flu shots would be delivered on time and that there would be no delays or shortages. But one Shreveport pharmacist tells us differently.

Dr. Doug Boudreaux of Boudreaux's Specialty Pharmacy contacted KTBS 3 News Tuesday morning saying his supplier expects the flu vaccine to be late. A shipment he was supposed to receive next week will not be here until mid November.

"The FDA is limiting the number of people that check the batches to make sure they are released. A new batch was supposed to be released October 16 and now they've pushed it back to November 16" says Boudreaux.

Not so great news for mother and Shreveport Gymboree Play and Music owner Kelly Hodgeson.

"I definitely wanted to get the flu shot this week so I guess I'll have to be calling around and see who has flu shots and I hope we can get them all in one location" says Hodgeson.

Hodgeson's entire family gets vaccinated against the flu and recommends her employees to as well since children are vulnerable but she worries what these delays will mean for the health of her family and customers.

"It was just one more thing I did not think about the shutdown and flu shots. It's just one more surprise" says Hodgeson.

One Boudreaux did not think of either when he himself put off getting the shot in order for his patients to get theirs.

"It's a serious issue in the health care realm when the healthcare professionals can't even get the flu vaccine so the government shutdown has really delayed that part of the flu vaccine" says Boudreaux.

The healthcare providers we spoke with around here have already received their vaccinations. Boudreaux says that if you were planning to get one and have to wait, to just be cautious as the flu season gets started.
