Concerned motorist follows reckless driver for 30 minutes, no sign of police

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Recklessness on the roadway- that's what one local woman, Emily Green, says she experienced during her morning commute Tuesday.

Equally troubling, she says, is the fact that when she called for help there were no Shreveport Police patrol cars available to intervene.

"It's kind of silly to think they can protect 100% of the citizens 100% of the time, but to spend thirty minutes following a dangerous driver and not see one single police officer, it's disappointing," Green says.

Green says she first spotted the red Toyota Corolla at the intersection of Gilbert Ave. and Kings Hwy.

Over the next 30 minutes and 7 miles, Green reports the car drifted inside the lane, nearly avoided a head-on collision with other vehicles, sped through school zones and ran red lights.

Green spent much of her time behind the Corolla on the phone with 911 dispatchers.

"She kept trying," Green says of the dispatcher. "God bless her. She was a sweet, sweet lady staying on the phone with me, talking me through everything. I know why was doing her best to get an officer to us, but I guess there weren't any available. She said there had been fifty calls that morning."

In 2012, Shreveport Police reports responding to 1,075 calls for service about speeding and 1,355 traffic complaints. SPD officers made 35,074 traffic stops.

Of the almost 9,200 crashes in Shreveport last year, roughly a third occurred in the AM hours.

Police say Green did the right thing by contacting 911. They say concerned citizens can help officers by getting a license plate number and vehicle description.

"Never put yourself in harm's way," says SPD's Cpl Marcus Hines. "If a person is driving to the point where, they're already endangering the lives of others, you don't want to add to that risk by putting yourself in unnecessary danger."

Green says she has the utmost respect for the boys in blue who patrol Shreveport streets. She simply wishes there more of them with more help of their own.

"I want police officers to be able to do their jobs," Green says. "I want them to have the resources they need, clearly they don't."

The City of Shreveport made the proposed 2014 Annual Operating Budget available online Wednesday. The draft includes information about Shreveport Police funding.
