Athlete of the Week: Blake Bogenschutz

CARTHAGE, Tx -

"Blake's started 33 games and he broke Anthony Morgan which is a special, special player, maybe the best player that's ever come through here.  He broke his touchdown record and broke his passing yardage record last week so that's pretty good company," head coach Scott Surratt said.

Bulldog gunslinger Blake Bogenschutz put himself at the top of the Carthage record books last week with 5 touchdowns in just the first half against Rusk.  But when you play for a school that has made winning state titles a habit, there is only one thing that matters.

"When I came in we had won three state championships in a row and the last two years we hadn't got there so people were saying maybe he doesn't have it, maybe he's not the one to lead this team to a state championship so this is the year I want to try to prove myself," Bogenschutz said.

And coach Surratt says his quarterback has all the necessary tools, both on and off the field to fill that empty spot in the scoreboard.  Along with leading the Bulldog's complex offense and sometimes calling plays, Bogenschutz is also at the top of his class academically, even going for class Valedictorian.  His hard work and dedication has also given him the chance to play at the next level, a dream the UTSA commit says he didn't always know he had.

"In 7th grade and 8th grade, I was always a basketball, baseball type of guy.  When I got to high school, I really liked the high school coaches and how they did things around here was real organized.  I started to really like football and my sophomore year I started I thought football might be the sport for me.  It's always been my dream to play college football so San Antonio gave me an offer and I accepted it,"  Bogenschutz explained.

With Bogenschutz calling the shots in an offense that has scored at least 42 points in every game this season, it's easy to see why the Roadrunners gave him that offer.
