Bossier Teacher Evaluations - The Key to their Success

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

The kinks have finally been worked out.

At least that's what the Louisiana Department of Education hopes when it comes to how teachers are evaluated.

The Bossier Parish School District is leading the way when it comes to having the best teachers in the state, according to this new way of evaluating them. Parkway Principal Dr. Nichole Bourgeois evaluates teachers at Parkway High School and she is looking for some very specific details.

"I want to see the teacher facilitating learning. I wanna see the instruction being directed by the student. That the student has been provided lots of activities that are gonna develop important objectives that a teacher has set forth, " said Bourgeois.

The state changed the standards of what makes a great teacher last year. It's a new process that had some principals stressed out over how time-consuming the
new evaluations are. The state made them more intensive and considers a number of other factors that the old evaluations did not, like how well a student performs on a state test. Former Elementary Principal, Janiene Batchelor knows the stress level all to well and now it's her job to help principals with the process.

"The part that I play in my job is providing support to educators, is the job we're gonna do anyway and what could I do to help you and the way that you teach to impact our kids," said Batchelor.

Bossier Parish school officials created Batchelor's position to help assist principals like Bourgeois determine what to look for when evaluating teachers and how to intervene when a teacher gets a bad evaluation.

"My understanding is 3 ineffective scores, you lose your certification and you won't be able to teach," said Batchelor.

Intensive development is given to teachers who get a bad evaluation. But Bourgeois has not had to do such extra training. Nearly all of her teachers are ranked as highly effective.
"If I had an ineffective teacher, which I do not, I would begin by highlighting the areas of need and providing that teacher feedback and then going one step further and using the intensive assistance program, " said Bourgeois.

While some principals still deal with the complexity of evaluating teachers, Bourgeois feels the process, not only improves teaching methods, but makes learning more interesting for students.
