District 5 candidates talk about their platforms

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Next Saturday is election day across Louisiana. In Shreveport, folks in Caddo Parish District 5 will pick a new commissioner. Late District 5 Commissioner Joyce Bowman lost her life to cancer earlier this year. Two candidates are campaigning for her seat, including her son. For barber Richie Williams and other voters that live in district 5, job creation and youth involvement are the most important topics they want the area's future commissioner to address.

"We gotta help our youth. So, I'm hoping that whatever candidate is picked for the job, that they get with city hall and the mayor and find out how to work with our youth," Williams said.

It seems both candidates Jerald Bowman and Earnestine Coleman want to meet those needs. Bowman claims to have a fresh approach to such issues.

"When I say fresh leadership, I mean hands on, getting into knowing the community," Bowman said.

Quality of life is another topic he wants to address. Bowman says he'll work to make the area more attractive for families and young people.

"We have to show them and given the citizens reasons to believe this is a place where they can live, work and a place people can come and visit, as well," Bowman said.

One way he hopes to do this, not only by job creation but developing and improving the fair grounds. Coleman also wants to improve the fair grounds. She believes her experience will help with those efforts and others.

"I have 31 years of working in the community, serving on boards....," Coleman said.

Helping district 5 businesses flourish is another goal of Coleman. She wants to spur economic development and make the area more attractive to travelers on I-20.

"People will stop on their way to Dallas, Longview or where ever," Coleman said. "They'll come off the interstate, and I want them to see progress, to see that the businesses are flourishing and that they can come into a save environment."

Election day is October 19th, next Saturday.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...

So far we've brought you a whistle blower employee, and then, after two weeks of waiting, you heard the official V.A. response. But it's said that there are three sides to every story.“We're not challenged for access at Overton Brooks, we can provide same day access, that's why we're encouraging same day access, that's why we're encouraging veterans to enroll into our system.” Those are the words from Interim Director at Overton Brooks V.A.
