Payton seeks to encourage Saints after tough loss

METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Sean Payton figures his players deserve to go into their bye week feeling good about themselves.

So while the coach is examining what the Saints could have done differently to avoid a dramatic loss at New England on Sunday, he's also complimenting the overall effort that has defined New Orleans' 5-1 start.

Payton says he's proud of the way the Saints played against the Patriots, and that he likes "the work ethic and competitive nature" they've exhibited this season.

The coach says he hopes this week brings "a good break" for his players, and says the most important thing for them now is getting rest before returning to prepare for the Buffalo Bills next week.

When the Saints resume, they'll still be in first place in the NFC South.
