DESOTO PARISH, La. -

The chlorine burn in DeSoto Parish Water District 1 to kill the brain eating amoeba found in the system last week is ahead of schedule, according John Neilson, the district administrator.

Neilson said 70 percent of the parish is at the 1.0 mg/liter of free chlorine, the level state requires for the burn. Once the entire parish reaches that level, the water district must maintain it for 60 days in order to kill the amoeba.

The Department of Health and Hospital will perform their first official sample since the burn Wednesday, Neilson said. He is cautiously optimistic the state will allow the 60 day count to begin after their test.

During the burn, Neilson said the customers may notice a higher smell and taste of Chlorine in the drinking water, but levels of Chlorine will stay below maximums recommended by Louisiana DHH. The water's coloration might also be different, but Neilson assures residents it is safe.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...
