SHREVEPORT, La. -

A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Shreveport.

It happened in the 500 block of Americana Dr. near E 70th St. and E Kings Hwy around 7:45 Tuesday evening.

Police say a woman inside the home called EMS to say that the man who lived there was having difficulty breathing and reported an "altered level of consciousness."

SPD Public Information Officer Marcus Hines says the man, identified 58-year-old John Shepherd, became combative and law enforcement was called in.

Shortly after this, the man allegedly armed himself with a kitchen knife, came outside the home and tried to lunge at first responders.

According to preliminary information, Officer Philip Tucker, upon initiating contact with an armed Shepherd, issued him multiple loud, verbal, commands to put the knife down. Shortly after police say Officer Tucker fired one fatal shot into the man's chest.

Police say Shepherd was transported to University Health where he died from the injuries. His body was taken to the Caddo Parish Coroner's Office for autopsy.

There is no information immediately available on the kind of knife used in the alleged attack or how close the man was to first responders when the shot was fired.

Police will review recordings of the event and interview the officer involved before he or she is put on leave, which is customary following such incidents.

"If the dash cams and microphones were operating- which they should have been- then that information will be gathered," Hines says.

Neighbors say Shepherd was friendly and gave small gifts to area kids.

Chief  Shaw has placed Officer Philip Tucker, hired by the department in February 2009, on paid administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.  Investigators are continuing their probe into the matter at this time.
