Shreveport-brewed beer on tap for first time since Prohibition

SHREVEPORT, La. -

Shreveport is now home to two new craft breweries, but they're both firsts for Port City.

Owned by husband-and-wife duo Andrew and Lindsay Nations, Great Raft Brewing poured and sold Shreveport's first locally brewed beer since the days of Prohibition Tuesday afternoon.

"It's a very historic event," Lindsay Nations said Tuesday as Zocolo bar staff opened the tap on Great Raft's flagship beer, a black lager named Reasonably Corrupt. "We're really excited to be helping to revitalize the brewing culture here in Northwest Louisiana."

Shreveport City Councilman Jeff Everson bought the first pint. The District B representative hopes the city's two new breweries will bring local residents together and attract tourists' attention.

"It really gives people a point of local pride to come together over something," Everson says. "I know it may be trivial to say that people unite behind a local beer, but it's not really."

"Louisiana has eight other breweries, but northwest Louisiana is just now getting their time to shine," Lindsay Nations says.

Across town, Red River Brewing Co. celebrates their own place in the history books.

Red River owners received their state paperwork Wednesday, Oct. 9, and when they did they become the city's first licensed brewery in more than hundred years.

"It's sort of a surreal sort of moment," Red River co-owner Robert McGuire says. "Still, I don't think I've gotten over it yet."

Although a licensing hurdle had the potential to bar the new breweries from Shreveport's BREW Festival, both companies will be at the city's largest beer-based event.

"Shreveport's going to go from zero to two breweries all in a period of just a few weeks so it's going to be really awesome," Red River's Jared Beville says. "It's a great time to be drinking craft beer in Shreveport."

You can find Great Raft's offerings on tap at Zocolo on Ashley Ridge Blvd.

Red River will do their first pour at Rotolo's on Friday, Oct. 24.

According to Brewer Association's June 2013 numbers- the latest data available- there were 2,483 craft breweries in the United States.
