Beth Holloway speaks in Shreveport 8 years after daughter disappears in Aruba

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

It's the mystery that made headlines around the world - the disappearance of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway while she was on a high school trip to Aruba in 2005.

Today, her mother, Beth Holloway, made a special in Shreveport to support the Gingerbread House, and raise awareness about personal travel safety.

She took time to meet-and-greet while at the luncheon.

Holloway says it's been a difficult journey, but she emphasizes the importance of never losing hope when a loved one is missing.

"When a devastating or traumatic event occurs, you're all over the map, emotionally and physically. You feel like you may never reconnect with life again but I give them hope that they will reconnect with life again."

She describes a full circle safety plan for young adults that is often the focus of her presentations.

"That's reminding them to pay as much attention to how the plan to end their outing as they do in figuring out who they're going with, where they're going, what they're going to wear. Because I feel like, what happens at the end of the night, that's where all the plans tend to break down."

Dutch citizen Joren Van der Sloot was arrested twice on suspicion of involvement with Holloway's disappearance, while brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe were each arrested three times.

Due to lack of evidence, the three men were released without charge each time.

Holloway was declared dead in absentia on January 12, 2012.

The Gingerbread House serves nine parishes and over 750 child abuse victims every year.

The center carries the highest forensic interview case load out of the 16 child advocacy centers in Louisiana.
