Deputies in Webster parish involved in weekend shooting

Posted: Updated:
WEBSTER PARISH, La. -

A deputy with Webster Parish Sheriff's Office has been placed on administrative leave following a shooting that sent a Doyline man to LSU Medical Center.

Webster Sheriff Gary Sexton says Bert Houston, 45, was shot twice in a leg, just above the ankle and in the thigh. Two officers were at the scene. Sexton says one deputy fired after Houston aimed a compound hunting bow and arrow at him and drew back to fire.

The officers responded to a domestic violence in progress call around 6:30 Friday evening at Houston's home, located at 707 Carter Road in Doyline. Sexton says a witness saw Houston strike a woman on the front lawn. Houston, armed with a bow, allegedly stormed from the home while officers were walking up to the front porch.

The deputy has been with Webster Sheriff's Office for around three years. Both he and the other officer were given blood tests at a local hospital for signs of intoxication. The tests came back clear. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave with pay while an investigation into the shooting continues.

About one year ago, KTBS brought you a startling investigation into federal background checks for firearm purchases. Background checks are supposed to weed out felons and mental defectives. But Louisiana had reported zero mental defectives to the FBI's background check system, making us one of the worst states for keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. Because of that, lawmakers passed laws to fix these broken background checks. Until this law went into effect, someone could walk...
