Grambling president on Doug Williams' firing: "It's a personnel matter"

Posted: Updated:
GRAMBLING, La. -

The Grambling State players boycott forced the university to forfeit Saturday's game when the team didn't show up for practices or to load the buses.  It seems like the firing of former head coach Doug Williams was one of the many catalysts to the players revolt.

In a letter ESPN obtained where the players listed their concerns to the administration, they said they were not addressed as to why their legendary head coach was let go until a month later.    They asked why would the administration fire Williams without any intentions of appointing a 'competent' replacement.

One player told KTBS 95 percent of the team chose Grambling for Doug Williams and that the current players had personal issues with interim head coach George Ragsdale.

Grambling president Dr. Frank Pogue's response was that the relationship between Williams and the university is that of school and employee and he treated the matter with confidentiality.
