Arkansas teen battles rare brain infection

Posted: Updated:
ASHDOWN, Ark. -

While a Southwest Arkansas teen battles a rare brain infection in Little Rock, his classmates, teachers and community is rallying support on the homefront.

Doctors believe Coleman Pearson, 13, has Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

It's a rare brain infection transmitted by mosquitoes.

In fact, it's so rare health officials say not one human case of the disease has been found in Arkansas in the last 50 years.

Coleman Pearson has been in Arkansas Children's Hospital since early October after suffering what his family first believed was a seizure.

Now they know the 8th grader's condition is much more serious.

Principal James Jones describes Coleman as an outgoing teen, a leader in his class, and joy to be around.

"He loves the outdoors, he's well liked by the kids at school. He's just a top kid," explained Jones.

Throughout the hallways, students have written encouraging notes, prayers, and letters of support to their classmate.

Health officials say there's no treatment for the disease coleman is now fighting and that the only option is to let the infection run its course.

Meanwhile, the Ashdown panther's continue to think about him daily.

"They're all very supportive of him," said Jones. "We wish he was back with us."

Pearson's condition has not yet been confirmed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and prevention.

Doctors do not see this case as an overall threat to public health.
