SHREVEPORT, La. -

The gates at the State Fair of Louisiana in Shreveport officially open on Thursday, and the final nuts and bolts are being tightened on rides at the fair grounds.

But before the first person can ever board, those rides have to pass a safety inspection.

From the ferris wheel to the kiddie train, every ride with mechanical parts must be checked - and doubled-checked - before anyone is allowed on board.

"Safety is a huge factor. It's always one of our top priorities, not only ride safety but safety for our guests here."

General Manager, Chris Giordano, says the State Fire Marshal is already on the job, inspecting Crabtree Amusement's rides for everything from loose bolts to malfunctioning equipment.

"The Louisiana State Fire Marshal's office does a pre-opening inspection on every single ride that gets set up, not only at this fair but at every amusement area in the state of Louisiana."

Officials with the Fire Marshal's office say rides that don't initially pass inspection will be tagged with red ribbons for follow-up.

But the safety checks don't stop with the Fire Marshal.

"Certified ride inspectors that are hired by [Crabtree Amusement] that travel with them to every spot that constantly, routinely inspect the rides."

Giordano says Crabtree Amusements will even bring in an independent third party inspector who'll be present every day for the duration of the fair.

"It takes constant monitoring, routine inspections, and constant addresses to the employees and ride operators."

Giordano says Crabtree Amusements requires its ride operators and carnival employees to undergo pre-employment drug screenings.

He says extra devices are also installed on the rides so that a secondary device must be engaged in order for the ride to operate.

The fair will run from October 24th through November 10th.

It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
