LA Tech's silver lining

Posted: Updated:
RUSTON, La -

Louisiana Tech may have had its homecoming spoiled by North Texas, but in the cloud that has formed a 2-5 start to the season there may be a silver lining, the growth of quarterback Ryan Higgins.  The Bulldogs may have had plenty of negatives in their 28-13 loss to North Texas Saturday, but there is one thing for Bulldog fans to be excited about, the development of their young quarterback.

"I can't say enough about the way Ryan Higgins is competing," says head coach Skip Holtz.  "What he's doing out there, We've got to do a better job at protecting him.  As a redshirt freshman to throw the ball 55 times I think we are asking a lot from a young quarterback, but I couldn't be more proud of the way he has stood in there and the way he has competed and some of the things that he's doing and the way he is maturing as a quarterback and coming along."

Higgins himself is not backing away, ready to take the challenge and responsibility.  "Really just, every snap, I'm just getting more and more comfortable," Higgins says.  "Not only with our offense, but with everything we're doing as a team.  Everything's slowing down and it's just more and more comfortable every week."

Up next for Higgins and the Bulldogs, a road trip to Miami for a showdown with FIU.  Like LaTech, the Panthers joined Conference USA this year.  And that's not the only thing these two programs have in common.  Holtz says, "They're playing a lot of young players, they're in the same boat.  I think when you look at it their quarterback is the only one returning for them from last year's team.  I know that they've got a lot of young players.  They've been through some growing pains such as we have.  I know it's a new coaching staff coming in.  They've got talent on that team, a lot of talent.  You can see them getting better and better every week."

The 1-5 Panthers look to be a good matchup for the Bulldogs, as long as the Dogs can limit those little mistakes.
