ASHDOWN, Ark. -

An Arkansas teen who has been battling a rare brain disease that doctors believe is Eastern Equine Encephalitis, has succumbed to his illness.

13 year-old Coleman Pearson, of Ashdown, passed away Tuesday evening at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.

The southwest Arkansas community is heartbroken over Pearson's passing.

Students, staff and teachers at Ashdown Junior High gathered around the flag pole Wednesday afternoon to honor the memory of Coleman Pearson.

School officials say counselors have been on campus to help students cope with the loss of their classmate.

A community prayer vigil will be held Thursday morning at 7:45 a.m. on the Ashdown Junior High campus.

Pearson's funeral will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the High School football stadium.

Friends describe Coleman as an "outgoing" person and a "leader."

Health officials say the disease is so rare that not one human case of the illness was found in the last 50 years.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...

Ever since allegations that veterans died waiting for care came out of phoenix, we've all been asking, why, and how could an organization aimed at helping our servicemen and women foster an atmosphere where this has gone on for so long?
