JSU suing Grambling State University over no-show

JACKSON, Miss. (WAPT) -

There's been more fallout from the Jackson State University homecoming game that never happened.

SU's website says the school plans to sue Grambling State.

Grambling was a no-show, so Saturday's game was canceled.

This came after players didn't show up for practice twice, and then they didn't get on the bus to come to Jackson.

The website says the school plans to use litigation, and goes on to say "Jackson State University's and the city of Jackson's losses could be in the millions. It would be irresponsible for JSU to fail to pursue some redress."

JSU spokesman Eric Stringfellow said the university had promoted and planned for the big match-up for a year.

"We make budgets based off football games, so when a revenue stream just evaporates, you have to scramble to find a way to make up that money," Stringfellow said. "

Stringfellow said, in ticket sales alone, the university lost out on at least $200,000 after it was forced to offer refunds to fans. Stringfellow claims the overall losses could creep into the millions.

The homecoming festivities at Jackson State University will be remembered for the game that didn't happen.

The last-minute cancellation left many Tiger fans upset and prompted an apology from the Grambling State University President Frank Pogue.

In a statement released by Grambling, Pogue said, "We have had our financial challenges this year, and unfortunately, too many of our players don't understand the degree of fiscal challenges. We are sorry."

The disgruntled Grambling team has been at odds with administrators about their treatment and the firing of their legendary head coach.

"They want us to perform to the best of our ability, but with poor facilities and poor stuff," Grambling football player Naquan Smith said.

The players ended the boycott Monday after speaking with former coach Doug Williams.
