Former Grambling great calls for President and A.D. to "walk away"

Posted: Updated:
Grambling, LA -

The sub-standard conditions at Grambling which caused players to walk out last week has caught the eye of the country and alumni.  Former Grambling All-American and Dallas Cowboys star Everson Walls is one prominent former player disgusted with what has happened at his alma mater.

Walls told KTBS 3 Sports that he knows the university's administration has been aware of the unclean conditions in the athletic facilities for "at least two years."  Walls says much has been made of the 14-17 hour bus rides the players were forced to take in back to back weeks to Kansas City and Indianapolis, but he says the unhealthy conditions in the locker rooms and weight room led to three cases of staph infections that he knows of.  Walls says the administration "has failed" these student athletes and damaged the reputation of a university he and so many others made so strong.  Walls says this administration's job was to deal with the budget cuts and exhibit some foresight in handling the reduced budgets.  But to ignore the children of parents who entrusted the university to care for them in the way the athletic facilities have been ignored is unacceptable.

Everson Walls says President Frank Pogue and Athletics Director Aaron James have provided no leadership and need to stop acting as if this was about them keeping their jobs.  Walls says both Pogue and James need to just "walk away."  But Walls adds not all the blame goes to those two, he says much belongs with the state for cutting budgets in a way that has put all our universities in trouble.  Walls adds that Pogue and James not only need to be replaced, but when that step is taken it needs to be with people from "a younger generation."

Everson Walls played for the legendary Eddie Robinson and was inducted in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
