Squirrel hunting with Brian Fowler

Some guys are out bow hunting for deer right now. We are heading out to squirrel hunt on a very early Saturday morning.

Remember Bubba and Josh?    We went noodling together this past summer.  Today we're going squirrel hunting.....Or as Bubba and Josh like to call them....tree rats.  And the first thing we do is look for the right area for the best chance for hunting squirrel.  And Bubba has his own scientific method for scoping them out.

Bubba likes to move fifty to sixty yards then stop. Then wait. Thats the only way you know where they are. By watching limbs move in the distance or listening for the bark.  And that's hard to do when the weather comes into play. They tend to not like to move when there's a whole lot of wind. Its hard to see limbs move with 15 mile per hour winds. But the breeze is only part of the puzzle in this sport.

When you're out on the hunt one of the things you need to know is what tree has the ripe nut. That's where the squirrels are going to be feasting. And fortunately we were in a honey hole of sorts and now its time to bag my first squirrel.

And finally I get my squirrel!  BANG! POW! BOOM!  The little guy falls from the tree and into a pile of leaves below. Then I'm off to find my catch

After a while of searching I find him. "Hey i see him. Here he is. Ok. That's one for me. I've got about seven more to go. I probably won't make that today"..

Eight is the legal limit on a squirrel hunt here in louisiana and we found the best area to increase our odds of a good showing.

Josh told me that if they're cutting hickory nuts or beach mass or pine burs. You know that those trees are likely to produce more squirrels.

At the end of the hunt i got a critical review from the guys and they didn't hold back. First from Josh. "Don't grab on to little trees. Then he added…"You about eight years old. You go home with your daddy and you do that..  that's a butt whoopin'.

Bubba was more diplomatic…"A little more camo. A little less bright. I think it'll be a lot better."

"We'll let you build the camp fire next time".  Said Josh.  I guess this means I flunked my first squirrel hunt.

The guys actually told me that the worst part of squirrel hunting was fighting off the mosquitos.  And the best part?  The Vittles!  If you've got a great squirrel recipe, email it to me at bfowler@ktbs.com.   We just might post it on our website!
