New superintendent speaks on key issues

Posted: Updated:
CADDO PARISH, La. -

Mary Nash Robinson is handing over the reins of the Caddo Parish School District as newly named Superintendent Theodis Goree is preparing to take over.

On December 1st, the Shreveport native will be handed over a school district with 40,735 students faced with a looming a state takeover of 5 academically unacceptable schools.

Goree says he plans to stand behind the current Caddo Plan that will be submitted to the state; part of which, the district hopes to gain back control of Linwood and Linear Charter schools.

"I think any changes I make to that will probably be minimal if any at all, because we are so far down the road in that process," said Goree.

Goree is currently working as Area Superintendent with the Mansfield, Texas, ISD where he's also worked as a principal. Before that he worked in Fort Worth as a principal and assistant principal. The Shreveport native sees his biggest challenge as working towards a balanced budget and building relationships in the community.

"You know I don't currently live in the community, so of course I'll have some challenges with identifying and knowing what direction to go in, but I feel confident that I will have support in knowing who those stakeholders are," said Goree.

Caddo School's veteran and former Superintendent finalist, Dr. Mary Nash-Robinson says what she's heard of him so far is impressive.

"It's a plus that he is from Caddo, so he knows where he knows something about our schools.  He knows at least where they are located. He knows the communities that serve a particular school and that will be a plus for him. He's not starting from ground zero," said Nash-Robinson.

Dr. Goree is expected to begin work as of December 1st, that of course, is only a few days away from the district's deadline to submit their proposal of saving the 5 AU school's to the state.

Goree will receive an annual salary of $200,000 and a 3 year contract with the district.
