Parents' intervention at issue in voucher case

Posted: Updated:

The fight over government-funded private school tuition vouchers is back in federal court.

At issue in a Wednesday morning hearing is whether parents of Louisiana voucher students should be allowed to intervene in a court case linking the voucher issue to desegregation orders.

The U.S. Justice Department filed a federal court motion in September saying new vouchers should not be issued in districts that are under longstanding federal desegregation orders unless approved by a federal judge.

Parents and an organization supporting vouchers recently sought to intervene in the case to oppose the Justice Department effort. Justice lawyers say the parents have no cause to intervene because the motion doesn't threaten existing vouchers or seek to end the voucher program -- only to make sure it complies with desegregation orders.
