Domestic Violence Awareness Month ends but the problem continues

Posted: Updated:

When Kenyata Patterson woke up the first weekend in October to find obscenities spray-painted across her Shreveport home she was afraid that an ex-boyfriend who she separated from more than a year and a half ago was behind the threatening words.

"It makes you nervous," Patterson told KTBS 3 News. "It's spray paint now, but what's next?"

None of her neighbors say the person responsible so Patterson felt there were few options for her but to wait for the next attack. Instead, she found help had available, she just didn't know it.

Shreveport Police pulled up a long overlooked arrest warrant stemming from an alleged physical assault between the boyfriend and Patterson. They used this to arrest him.

Patterson was able to remove herself from the relationship, but often SPD detectives say women can't find the same strength and live as victims in plain sight.

"Their abuser is the only one that's working and they don't want to lose that income that they have," Det. Shaunda Holmes says of the reasons some women stay in abusive relationships. "They don't want to lose what they have at home, but they're crying out because the want that help. They just can't leave at that moment."

At Providence House, organizers say domestic violence affects all ages, races and economic levels. One in three women- they say- will be affected in her lifetime.

Providence House offers a safe house for women who need an escape. Finding funding for the 100-bed facility proves difficult as well.

"We've tapped out all the grants and we've gone through all the resources we have, but from a federal and from a state place those are areas that get cut quite often," says Tracey Locke, Director of Development at Providence House.

Shreveport Police Department's annual crime reports don't keep specify which homicides, assaults or rapes are the result of an abusive relationship. However, the reports do say in 2012 SPD responded to more than 2,400 "domestic trouble" calls, the yearly number has been steadily dropped since 2009.
