Authorities investigate stolen bridge supports

Posted: Updated:
Little River County, Ark. -

Southwest Arkansas authorities are investigating a case of domestic terrorism involving the 41 Index Bridge between Texas and Arkansas.

Metal bracings from the bridge were reported stolen to the Little River County Sheriff's Office.

The Marion H. Crank Memorial Bridge or Index bridge is a well traveled connector between two states across the Red River.

Little River Sheriff officials say a state bridge inspector notified them after discovering six metal bracings were missing.

"We're going to investigate and do what we need to do to resolve the problem," said Sheriff Greg Gregory, Little River County Sheriff's Office.

While state road crews work to replace the bridge supports, Sheriff Gregory says they're working to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Gregory says they're investigating the theft as a case of domestic terrorism because detaching or removing anything from a bridge unless governed by the state is a criminal activity.

"We don't know if they did it to cause deliberate harm to the bridge, or whether they stole it to build with it or sell it," said Sheriff Gregory.

Traffic is still open and there's no structural damage to the bridge.

However, Sheriff Gregory says the thefts are not only a safety hazard to those who removed the materials without the proper equipment, but it could have become a safety concern for motorists traveling the bridge.

"They can do damage to the bridge at some point, those bracings are there for a reason," said Gregory.

If you have any information on this case, call the Little River County Sheriff office at 870-898-5115.
