Veteran mariner tapped to helm Conn. whaling ship

Posted: Updated:

Mystic Seaport has hired veteran mariner to helm the newly restored Charles W. Morgan whaling ship.

The Day of New London reports that Richard Files, of Rockland, Maine, will lead the 172-year-old wooden ship as it sails to ports across New England next summer. The museum has spent the past four years restoring the ship.

Museum spokesman Dan McFadden said the number of qualified mariners is small. He says Files has the right experience and understands traditional sailing techniques and the Morgan's public role.

The 62-year-old Files said he learned to sail as a child and became a licensed mariner in 1974.

He is the captain of the Elissa, a three-masted, iron-hulled sailing ship built in 1877 and now located at the Texas Seaport Museum. It's operated by the Galveston Historical Association.
