Branson thief steals wheelchair from double amputee

BRANSON, Mo. (KSPR) -

Branson police are on the hunt for someone preying on the weak.

Officers are trying to find the person who stole a wheelchair from a double amputee at a Branson Walmart.

Donna Foister goes to that Walmart every Saturday for groceries. Her latest trip left her in tears when someone stole her independence.

"If someone needed a wheelchair and asked me, I would have given it to them. Instead they decided to steal it," said Foister as she starts to cry.

"It makes me mad and I cry when I'm mad," she said.

Sixteen years ago blood clots forced doctors to cut off her arm and leg.

"It's taken a long time to learn how to get around. I still get dizzy. It really affects your balance," Foister said.

Saturday she took a cab to the Branson Walmart. She left her wheelchair at the front of the store, like she normally does when she uses a store cart.

When she went to get her wheelchair, it wasn't there.

"I thought surely someone took it by mistake and would bring it back but no," she said.

That's when Walmart employees discovered surveillance video of the thief walking it right out the door.

"It shows someone looking at my wheelchair, opening it up then looking around to see if anyone's watching and took it out the door," said Foister.

Her apartment complex gave her a loaner, which she is grateful for but says it's old, ill fitting, and hurts her hips.

Foister's friends are just as outraged as she is.

"It's very sad because she really needed it. It's upsetting thinking that we have people out there that would do things like that," said Audrey Burkenfield.

Foister says the criminal took more than just a chair but also took her dignity.

"I've been depressed, really depressed," she said.

Walmart corporate officials say they are working with police to see if they can catch the person who took the chair.

Foister does own a motorized chair but says she can't use it often.

She takes cabs to get around and says most don't have the ability to load it up into the vehicles.
