LHSAA ruling upheld, Parkway High School not allowed to host any playoff games

Posted: Updated:
BOSSIER CITY, La. -

They're undefeated but the Parkway Panthers stadium will not see one game during playoffs.

That was the punishment handed down by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association after last year's game against Live Oak High School.

Parkway principal Doctor Nicole Bourgeois had Live Oak Coach Barry Musemeche handcuffed and removed because she said he went over his allotted pre-game warm-up time.

Parkway parents and alumni spoke out in hopes of getting that ruling changed but their pleas fell on deaf ears.

The LHSAA ruled last November that Parkway High School could not host any post-season football games because of that incident and KTBS 3 News has learned that the ruling will stand.

However, many say the kids are bearing the brunt of the punishment.

"There's definitely an attachment to the south Bossier community, my business and Parkway High" says Shane Cheatham.

Shane Cheatham owns Smart Phone Specialists off Barksdale Boulevard and is a Parkway alum. He says the ruling cripples many families who may not be able to travel hours away for a play-off game.

"It's not affordable to take a whole family and get one or two hotel rooms" says Cheatham.

Not only that, Cheatham and fellow business owner, C. B. Burkhardt, whose child attends Parkway, says the lost revenue for Parkway High School as well as the surrounding area adds up quickly.

"It's going to take a lot of money out of those pockets for organizations which puts stress on parents and the community" says Burkhardt.

But both say the bottom line is that the first play-off game may indeed be the last for many seniors, and that being forced to play it on the road is a punishment the students don't deserve.

"Whether it's money or not, it's about the kids and the kids did not have anything to do with the situation that happened last year at the play-off game" says Burkhardt.

A statement by the LHSAA says a motion was made and seconded to reconsider the penalty phase of that ruling but the motion failed in an Executive Committee meeting Wednesday afternoon by a vote of 11 to 3 with one abstention and the president not voting.

The LHSAA says 16 of the 25 committee members were able to participate in the conference call to hear the request to reconsider the sanctions.

Bossier Parish Schools released a statement earlier today, saying - in part - 'While Dr. Bourgeois fully accepts the LHSAA sanctions waged against her as a principal, she disagrees with those made against parkway's team and coaches.'

The community is still hoping for a compromise and possibly play at another stadium here in Shreveport-Bossier.

If the Panthers win Friday night, Parkway will be undefeated for the first time in the school's history.

A group of parents even started a Facebook page dedicated to getting the word out about the issue and there's a petition currently be circulated.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...
