Bonus Month for City Officials

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

Two terms, eight years in office, plus an additional four weeks. That's how long  Cedric glover and the current city council will be in office. The extra month in office means a new administration won't be sworn in until December of 2014.

It's nothing that Mayor Glover and city council members did, it's just how the election calendar fell this year. State officials were looking for a way to simplify elections for Caddo Parish, getting rid of party primaries and holding only an open primary. But while fixing that, city officials gained an extra month of service.

Ernie Roberson, Caddo Registrar of Voters said, "They did away with the extra party primary at the behest of every constituent that was confused by it. They felt like that just caused too much confusion so they went back to open primary elections for 2014." Roberson also said the state even saved more than $3 million dollars by cutting out that extra election date. Now Caddo Parish will have their open primary on November 4th 2014 where we'll vote for offices like mayor, city council, judges, and city Marshal. After that, we will hold our general election or run off on December 6th. And we must wait 12 days for the certification of those votes from the December election, which ends on December 18th. City council chairman Michael Corbin says city officials can be sworn in anytime after that. "Instead of new council and new mayor being sworn in at the end of November, it's now scheduled for December 27th."

And another kink in the plan Corbin said, "The current council will be the ones to set the 2015 general budget." That means that the newly elected city council members will have to enact the current city council's financial plan for the city, which could prove to be problematic for the incoming bunch.

The extended term applies to all city elected officials, not just Mayor Glover and City Council.

Another kink in the extended term plan, there will be a new city council chair and vice chair for only one month before the newly elected officials take office.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...
