Nash, Texas considers rezoning for alcohol sales

Posted: Updated:
Nash, Texas -

Now that alcohol sales have been approved in Nash, Texas, city officials will soon consider new zoning requirements.

So it could take awhile before you can buy alcohol in the city limits.

Despite some division over the proposals, voters approved two propositions that would allow alcohol sales.

Resident John Michael says it's not only going to make the roads safer, but will make the city more competitive.

"I think they will have to push their ad campaigns up a little to compete because more people are going to want to come to the Texas-side for beer," said Michael.

Resident Jennifer Prince believes alcohol sales will have a positive economic impact on the city of nearly 3,000.

"Our dollars are staying in Texas, we're having to go to another state to spend our money and I just think great that we are keeping it here in Texas," said Prince.

City officials say now that the propositions have passed, they could possibly attract more restaurants and a large grocery chain.

They're estimating that sales tax revenue could also increase up to $400,000 a year.

Fiesta House Restaurant Owner Randy Valenzuela says they're still deciding whether to serve alcohol, but he believes there are advantages to having the propositions pass.

"I think the revenue is definitely going to come here, it will be better for us business owners because alot more traffic will come," said Valenzuela.

City officials say established businesses will have to get a state license to serve alcohol and the council will to revise zoning before any new businesses that want to sell alcohol can locate to Nash.

Nash City Council will canvass the votes at their next regular meeting on November 18th.
