Some Caddo teachers take issue with draft plan

Posted: Updated:

Some Caddo teachers are expressing frustration over the direction of the School District's New Caddo Plan.

It's a joint proposal by the Caddo Parish School District and Recovery School District to rescue schools that have failed to make sufficient academic progress.

President of Red River United teachers organization, Jackie Lansdale, believes educators are clearly concerned about the stipulations in the 8-page draft .

"It offends us to our core of what we stand for, when we see our district collaborating with anybody that wants to dismantle public education, because that's what we see," said Lansdale.

The proposed plan was released on Tuesday and would offer more on-site help for schools, such as education management organization.

The plan also focuses on staffing quality instead of campus makeovers,  including removing staff at Midway and Atkins Elementary schools and Fair Park and Woodlawn High Schools at the end of the year.
Some teachers argue this presents potential problems with handing over control of the schools to an administrator who might have little or no experience in education.

"The face that teach for America we feel like that will undermined the professionalism of our jobs of who we are as teachers...you know professionals that is a huge concern and again how do we pay for that and how does it impact us economically," said Lansdale.

Caddo Parish Board members will vote on the plan during the November 19th meeting.
