Senator helps locals navigate Obamacare

Posted: Updated:

President Obama's apology was breaking news Thursday evening.

For the first time ever, he said he's sorry to the millions of Americans now finding they can't keep their health plan under new Obamacare regulations, despite assurances to the contrary.

He's vowed to help those who had their health insurance canceled and now a Shreveport politician is working to smooth things over.

Sen. Greg Tarver of Shreveport sponsored a public hearing on Thursday night as a way to help the community understand changes to their health care plans.

Dozens of people showed up to Morning Star Baptist Church to ask questions about the Affordable Care Act.

Tarver brought in insurance navigators from New Orleans to help break down the new law.

These navigators took time to get personal information from people at the meeting, so they can get on a new insurance plan.

"We're having some people come up to explain it to the people here, because so many lies and half-truths have been going around," said Tarver.

"I haven't gone to the website yet, because I heard it was down. But my mom has called and my dad has called. We're just waiting to see what happens," said Lea Jahde Bates.

One thing that was stressed Thursday night is that new insurance plans are still personal.

Premiums and co-pays still vary based on income and family size.

If you have questions about the Affordable Care Act, there's a toll free number to call. It's 855-899-4187.

If you missed Thursday night's public hearing, there's more to come next week.

David Raines Community Health Centers is hosting four community information forums on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

They'll be held at the Mack Memorial Library in Springhill starting at 11 a.m.
