Alleged threat on social media behind increased security at local high school

Posted: Updated:
CADDO PARISH, La. -

KTBS 3 News has learned that an alleged violent threat made online is behind an increase in security at a Caddo Parish high school.

The Director of Security for Caddo Parish Schools was called to respond to the situation at Northwood High School Friday.

A concerned parent tells KTBS 3 News that news of the alleged threat surfaced Thursday evening on social media.

Gina Springer is another parent at Northwood. She says she had to act fast after she heard about the online threats, "It really makes me mad. I got calls from a lot of parents this morning and there was a lot on her facebook page this morning saying parents weren't sending kids to school so they should have done something yesterday. I don't know if it's true or not. I just want to pick up my kid, take her home so she can be safe."

Victor Mainiero with Caddo Parish schools says officials were on top of the situation to ensure students and staff were safe while they investigate. There was an increased law enforcement presence at Northwood Friday morning, which may have only added fuel to the social media fire. "The school was never on lock down but they have put measures in place to make sure safety was a priority. As of right now, there's no definitive evidence of any threat."

But just as quickly as a post can pop up, it can disappear making the investigation difficult. Springer says, it's just an eerie reminder of the dangerous times we live in. "Kids don't need to come to school and live in fear, they need to come to school to learn and feel safe with their friends."
