GED test-takers rush to meet deadline

Posted: Updated:
Texarkana, Texas -

Students who are working toward their GED have an important deadline coming up at the end of this year.

Changes are coming to the high school equivalency exam across the entire country.

The urgency is heightened across Texas, where there are about 1-million adults who've started the GED, but haven't completed them.

Texarkana College student Katie Culp completed the GED test in October.

She says it was important for her to get the test completed before the changes were implemented.

"It was going to be more money and it was going to be on a computer," said Culp. "I was ready to get it out of the way because I knew I could do it."

In Bowie County, the 2010 census showed there were about 14,000 students still needing to receive their GED.

Right now, the test cost $75 and can be taken in written or computer-based form.

In the new version, test takers must use a computer.

The test itself will be more rigorous and cost $120.

GED scores will be wiped out when the new version arrives.

It's the first update to the test in more than a decade.

"We've seen an enormous amount of examinees wanting to rush in to meet that December 31st deadline," said LaMoya Burks, Director of Testing Texarkana College.

She says there are advantages to new GED test.

Students can register themselves and pay for it online with paypal.

"Computer based offers the opportunity for an examinee to immediately receive their score report," explained Burks.

She says the changes will also be in line with new college and career-ready standards.

Thanks to funding from an innovative grant, Culp is already receiving training for automechanics through Texarkana College.

"It will be better for my future for me and my kids, if I get a better education," said Culp.
