Katie Efferson & Polly Pendergrass win a $1,000 One Class At A Time check

Katie Efferson and Polly Pendergrass are first grade teachers for Evangel Christian Academy. The two got a big surprise when they were awarded $1,000  this week through "One Class At a Time."

Efferson and Pendergrass where appreciative of their grant.

"Well whatever we can do to enhance our students education that's what we want to do. We want to give them the best and have all the tools that they need," said Efferson.

Congratulations to those teachers from Evangel Academy.

We'd also like to thank our sponsors, Barksdale Federal Credit Union. Sudden Link, and CHRISTUS  Schumpert Group Practice Pediatric Associates.

We'd like to introduce you to another special teacher at Shreve Island Elementary, who won her grant one month ago. She  is using the funds to promote literacy.

The imagination can take you many places when  reading a book. That's the goal of one kindergarten teacher who is hoping to spark a love of reading with new books.

Hillary Bell was awarded with a "One Class At a Time" grant to purchase sunshine take home readers .

"We send those take home readers home on Monday, they read them all week long, they have activities that go with them and they return them on Friday," said Bell.

Bell said the overall benefits will be enhanced curriculum and improvement with reading skills.

"The text over and over gives them success at reading and they feel like readers and that's what's so important to them.

And, these little ones  in Mrs. Bell's class will have a better start in the classroom when they move up to the first grade.
