Future of Fair Grounds Field Up For Debate

Posted: Updated:

It was once the home of baseball champions, but now it's a haven for bats and other rodents. It's safe to say Shreveport's fair grounds fields has seen better days and city officials are tossing around ideas on it's future.

City council chairman, Michael Corbin says, soon we'll have to tackle the fair grounds field issue. "Ultimately, the decision will have to be made, what do we do with it. It's infested with bats that we're having trouble getting rid of. There's no minor league team that's coming to town or interested in coming to town."

The stadium isn't being used and is costing the city money. It costs $70,000 a year to maintain fairgrounds field but that's just the cost of cleaning and cutting it's grass. But it would cost $400,000 to demolish the old stadium and city officials hope that some parts could be salvageable.
Corbin says, the city can't afford to restore the stadium. "The locker rooms are outdated, the restrooms are outdated, it's not completely ADA compliant."

Sam Stroupe says fair grounds field is worth saving and has started a Facebook page to garner support. Stroupe says, demolition shouldn't be an option. "Baseball is a sport that's still active and well in most cities. I think it's something that could help Shreveport if we could just work toward that. If that's their option, I'd rather see them donate the facility to someone who can take care of it. I think it has a future. It's such a massive structure of steel and concrete and it's strong."
