SPD, South Highlands residents join together to fight car burglaries

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

When South Highlands Neighborhood Association President Cliff LeBlanc heard about a string of car break-ins on the group's Facebook page, he alerted Shreveport police.

"The neighborhood association has a very active Facebook page," LeBlanc says. "Through that technology and that communication, we've been able to communicate with each other and stay in touch."

SPD used the residents' information including the streets hit and approximate times for the break-ins to inform patrol officers on what to look for.

Wednesday morning, a patrol officer spotted Jacody Wilson,18, holding a tote bag standing near a vehicle with its door open on Dudley Dr. SPD says Wilson fled when confronted by the patrolman. Police found and arrested Wilson and two other teenagers shortly after that.

Friday, SPD arrested Ladarren Winbush, 17, as a suspect in a vehicle burglary that occurred earlier this week in the 700 block of Erie Street. Investigators believe Winbush entered an unlocked vehicle there on Erie Street and stole at least two firearms left in the vehicle. Authorities still looking for the stolen weapons.

Investigators say that back-and-forth between residents and SPD was the perfect example of a community and its civil servants working together.

"At the end of the day, we believe that the relationships we forge with neighborhoods all over our city that's one of the most important components of our crime reduction strategies," says SPD's Bill Goodin.

Police say the four suspects arrested do not include the young man who accidentally uploaded a photo of himself from a stolen iPhone to a South Highland victim's phone.

More arrests are expected in this case.

SPD has tips for to keep vehicles and possessions safe from crimes of opportunity:

  • Don't hide extra keys in easily accessible places. Criminals will find them.
  • Always park in visible, well-lighted areas.
  • Try to avoid parking next to a larger pickup truck or van. They can be easy to hide behind.
  • Any valuables in your car should be placed in the trunk or otherwise kept out of sight.
