Sleep Out 4 Independence puts the "fun" in fundraiser

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

A local event is putting the "fun" in fundraiser. Sleep Out 4 Independence is a fundraiser to benefit the Providence House of Shreveport.

Kids from local high schools and colleges got involved in the event. The kids made shelters out of cardboard boxes to sleep in.  Prizes were given for different categories.  There were bands, movies and more entertainment during the night.

The admission fee was $50. Sponsorship and all proceeds go to the Providence House. Organizers say last year nearly 4,500 people in North Louisiana had no place to call home. Many couldn't go to school, keep warm, or get enough to eat and all of them needed help.  Providence House has worked with hundreds of these families with children to get a hold on a new life. Susan Seiler-Smith, Chairman SleepOut For Independence said, "It's an hour before you're hungry, a day before you lose your job and a week before you lose your house. You never know when that's going to happen so we want to raise awareness."
