Scholarship named in honor of fallen police officer

Posted: Updated:
Texarkana, Texas -

A scholarship is named in honor of a fallen Texarkana, Texas police officer.

Officer Jason Sprague was killed in the line of duty last June while responding to a disturbance at Grady T. Wallace park.

Police say he was intentionally struck by a driver who was leaving the scene.

Texarkana College officials say the scholarship is a memorial to Sprague, as well as, an investment in those who answer the call to become police officers.

Stephanie Sprague says her husband, Jason, loved being a police officer.

"It meant that he was able to give back to a community that he felt passionate about, as well as, help change lives," explained Stephanie Sprague.

Texarkana College President James Henry Russell says the Officer Jason Sprague Memorial Scholarship is a fitting tribute.

"The scholarship has been designated for a high performing student in the field of criminal justice that wishes to serve this community in the future," said Russell.

He says the goal is to eventually raise $25,000.

The money to start the scholarship comes from an insurance policy provided by the police department for funeral costs.

Texarkana Funeral Home has a covenant with the Texarkana police, in which anytime an officer is killed in the line of duty, they will pay for the funeral expenses.

Funeral Home Vice President Vickers Fuqua says they donated the $6,000 to help launch the scholarship.

The first endowed scholarship is expected to be awarded in the next two years.
